The use of rice water for rinsing hair is an age-old method of getting lustrous hair. The oldest known to be used in Japan for over 1000 years.
What does rice water contain?
Rice contains carbs, Vitamin E, B1, B3, B6, Biotin, and some chemicals like inositol which protects and softens hair.
Is rice water good for hair?
Rice water makes your hair soft and lustrous. It is a good conditioner.
Does rice water promote hair growth?
It promotes hair growth, but for that, you need to use it for longer periods; for eg a month if you wish to grow your hair by 1 inch.
Can rice water straighten your hair?
Well, if you expect a result like chemically treated hair at a salon, then certainly no. Also otherwise, rice water is not a very good option to choose from natural ingredients to make your hair straight. There are other better ingredients available.
How to prepare rice water and how to use it?
There are mainly 4 ways to use rice water:
- Rinsed rice water
- Fermented rice water
- Boiled rice water
- Rice water paste
Rinsed rice water:
Take 2-3 tablespoons of rice (depending on the length of your hair). Wash it thoroughly and then soak it in 2 glasses of water. Let it stay for 2 hours. Then rub and rinse the rice thoroughly so that water turns milky. Use this water to rinse your hair after shampoo. Let it stay for a while and lightly rinse your hair with clean water.
Fermented rice water:
Take 2 cups of rice, wash and rinse it thoroughly. Then take 8 cups of water and soak the rice overnight or for 8 to 10 hours. Next, rub and rinse the rice in water so as to transfer the mineral and vitamins to the water. Water will turn milky. Separate the water from the rice. Now store this water in dark and let it ferment for a week. Once the water gets fermented it starts smelling so you can add peels of oranges or lemons (citrus fruits) to add fragrance and also Vitamin C helps in cleansing hair and revitalizing the scalp. You can also add essential oils like Rosemary oil, which is believed to promote hair growth. You can use 2 cups each time to rinse your hair and keep the rest for next time. The procedure to use it on your hair is the same as above.
Boiled rice water:
The most traditional way that Indian ladies have been using rice water is by boiling it. This can be prepared every time you cook rice. Take a cup of rice. Wash and rinse it thoroughly. Soak it for some time. Boil the rice. Boil until the rice is really soft. Separate the water and rice. Let it cool before use. After shampoo use this rice water on your hair. Let it stay for 5 to 10 minutes and then rinse with clean water. It gives luster to your hair.
Rice water paste:
To 3 tablespoons of rice, powder add 2 cups of water and put in a pan. Allow it to boil while stirring it. It turns into a thick milky paste. Let it cool. To this paste add 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Apply this paste to your hair. Apply only on your hair not on your scalp, as it may get itchy. Keep it for 2 hours followed by washing your hair with shampoo and conditioner.
