Why Is My Skincare Not Working? The Dry Skin Mistake That Kept My Pores Bigger and How I Fixed It

Why Is My Skincare Not Working? The Dry Skin Mistake That Kept My Pores Bigger and How I Fixed It

Like most carefree people, my skincare routine was as minimal as it gets.

A lightweight moisturiser. Sunscreen when I remembered. A face wash with "good" ingredients that felt mild on my skin. That was it. Simple. Easy. Done.

It was not long ago that I realised my skin is actually sensitive.

Living in a humid area, I had visible sebum and open pores — so naturally, I assumed I had an oily T-zone. Makes sense, right? More oil, more pores. So I did what logic told me to do — I reduced moisturiser even further and started washing my face every time I felt oily.

My skin kept getting worse.

How My Skin Went From Bad to Worse
😌
The Starting Point — Minimal Routine, No Concerns Lightweight moisturiser, occasional SPF, mild face wash. Felt fine. Thought my skin was okay.
🤔
Noticed Sebum + Open Pores Assumed oily T-zone. Cut back on moisturiser. Washed face more often whenever skin felt oily.
😟
Skin Got Worse — Tighter, Itchier, Bigger Pores The tightness wouldn't go. Itchiness started. Pores looked even bigger. Skin felt uncomfortable all day.
😫
Tried a Thicker Moisturiser — Got a Pimple Thought heavier cream would fix dryness. Woke up with a pimple the next morning. Skin was now dull + broken out.
😣
Tried Niacinamide + Pore Treatments — Got Itchier YouTube said niacinamide fixes everything. Added pore-refining treatments. Itchiness got worse, not better.
💡
The Awakening — Discovered Skin Barrier Read about barrier creams. Understood that open pores aren't just an oily skin problem. Everything clicked.
Finally — Relief. Glow. Comfort. Right products. Right approach. Pores minimised. Natural glow returned. Skin felt baby soft again.

When Doing Less Made Things Worse

Pores got bigger. My skin felt tighter. And there was this constant itchiness that just would not go away. Nothing I tried seemed to help.

Then I thought — maybe a thicker moisturiser would do it. If my skin feels tight, maybe it just needs more hydration.

I applied it that night. And BAM — a pimple the next morning.

Now I had a dull face. Bigger pores. And a pimple.

Looking in the mirror started making me feel under-confident. My skin felt like it was ageing faster than it should. I was doing things, trying things — and every single thing made it worse.

Following YouTube Advice — And Getting It Wrong

Like everyone on YouTube suggested, I started with niacinamide and other pore-refining skin treatments. The internet basically said this was the answer for pores, dark spots, oiliness — all of it.

But my skin became itchier.

Not better. Itchier.

And I still didn't understand why.

What I Tried Why I Tried It What Actually Happened
Less moisturiser Assumed oily skin doesn't need much Skin got tighter and itchier
More face washing Felt oily — thought washing would help Stripped skin further
Thick heavy cream Thought more hydration would fix tightness Got a pimple overnight
Niacinamide serum YouTube said it fixes pores Itchiness got worse
Pore refining treatments Targeting visible pores No change. Still itchy.

The Awakening — What I Was Actually Missing

One day I started reading about skin barrier creams. I didn't know much about them. And honestly, I had almost no faith that a cream could fix any of this.

But I kept scrolling through websites and ran a few queries — and that's when a few things finally made sense.

💡 Open pores are not just an oily skin problem. When skin becomes extremely dehydrated, the pores open up. And the itchiness I had been feeling? That was my skin barrier breaking down — not a reaction to any product.

Here is what I had got completely wrong all along:

What I Thought vs. What Was Actually Happening
❌ What I Assumed
  • Oily T-zone = oily skin
  • Sebum = too much oil
  • Pores = need pore minimisers
  • Itchiness = product reaction
  • Fix: use less moisturiser
VS
✓ What Was Actually True
  • Skin was ultra-dehydrated
  • Sebum was skin trying to self-repair
  • Pores opened from water loss
  • Itchiness = compromised barrier
  • Fix: repair the barrier first

The sebum I was seeing? My skin was actually producing its own oil to try to compensate for the moisture it was losing. It was self-defence. And I was fighting it by washing more and moisturising less — making everything worse.

Finding the Right Products — Trial, Error, and Finally Relief

Once I understood what was actually going on, I started looking for the right products. Not pore minimisers. Not niacinamide. Barrier repair.

But here is where it got a little tricky — my skin wasn't the same everywhere. My T-zone and the outer rim of my face had very different needs.

  • T-zone: Needed a barrier repair cream — something targeted and not too heavy
  • Outer rim of face: Much drier — needed something richer and thicker
  • Face wash: Had to find something soap-free — even washing with water and wiping with a towel made my skin itch

✦ The Products That Finally Worked For Me ✦
Barrier Repair · T-Zone
Aestura AtoBarrier 365 Cream
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
₹ 2000
This was my go-to for the T-zone. Lightweight enough to not clog pores but still gave my barrier the repair it desperately needed. The itchiness calmed down noticeably within the first week of using this.
✓ My verdict: The first product that actually gave me relief
Rich Moisturiser · Outer Face
La Roche-Posay Lipikar Baume AP+M
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
₹ 550
A French derma brand trusted by dermatologists globally. I used this on the drier outer rim of my face. Richer and more nourishing — exactly what that area needed. For the first time in a long while, my skin felt genuinely comfortable.
✓ My verdict: Worth every rupee for extremely dry areas
Face Wash · Budget Pick
Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser
★ ★ ★ ★ ☆
₹ 219
Soap-free, fragrance-free, and gentle enough for a compromised barrier. My skin was so sensitive at this point that even wiping with a towel caused itching. This cleanser didn't strip anything and kept my face clean without irritation. Economical and effective.
✓ My verdict: Does the job well — great value
Face Wash · Premium Pick
La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
₹ 1500
I tried both face washes. Honestly, the Cetaphil does the job. But if you can stretch your budget, this one felt noticeably more soothing and left skin slightly more comfortable after washing. The difference is real — just not dramatic enough to make Cetaphil a bad choice.
✓ My verdict: Better than Cetaphil — but both work

The Ingredients That Matter — And One to Use With Caution

Once I understood barrier repair, I also needed to understand what ingredients actually do the work — and which ones to be careful with.

🧱
Ceramides
Rebuild the skin barrier. Think of them as the mortar between bricks — without them, moisture leaks out and skin stays compromised.
🫒
Fatty Acids
Restore the lipid layer of your skin. Keeps skin soft, protected, and less reactive to the environment.
⚠️
Saccharomides
Helps skin hold water from within. But use with caution — this ingredient may not suit everyone and can cause irritation for some skin types.
⚠️ A note on Saccharomides: While this ingredient helps skin retain moisture, it does not work for everyone. If you notice increased irritation or sensitivity after using a product containing saccharomides, stop using it and consult a dermatologist. Always patch test first.

Where to Start If Your Skin Feels Like Mine Did
A Simple Step-by-Step Guide for Compromised Skin
1
Stop all actives immediately No niacinamide. No AHAs. No pore treatments. Give your skin a break from everything aggressive.
2
Switch to a soap-free, gentle cleanser If even washing with water makes your skin itch — your barrier is severely compromised. Start here.
3
Identify different zones on your face Your T-zone and the outer rim may need different products. Don't treat all skin the same way.
4
Apply a barrier repair cream — consistently Look for ceramides and fatty acids. Be patient. Give it 3–4 weeks before judging results.
Once comfortable — slowly reintroduce actives When itchiness is gone and skin feels calm, you can carefully bring in niacinamide or other treatments.
Signs Your Barrier Is Compromised — Check Yourself

Before you try any new product or treatment — check if any of these sound like you right now:

  • Skin feels tight right after washing — even with a gentle cleanser
  • Wiping with a towel causes itchiness or redness
  • Skin reacts badly to almost every new product you try
  • Looks dull and feels rough even right after moisturising
  • Sebum appears quickly but skin still feels uncomfortable underneath
  • The itchiness is constant — not tied to any specific product
  • Pores are getting bigger despite not having oily skin
💗 If you said yes to even two of these — please fix your barrier first. Nothing else will work until you do. Not niacinamide. Not pore treatments. Not a thicker cream. The barrier comes first.

Before vs After — What Changed for Me
Area Before After
Face wash Regular face wash, used often Soap-free gentle cleanser, twice daily max
Moisturiser Skipped it or used wrong formula Barrier repair cream for T-zone, richer one for outer face
Pore treatment Niacinamide + pore refining serums Nothing — focused on barrier repair only
Skin feeling Tight, itchy, uncomfortable Soft, calm, relieved
Pores Visibly getting bigger Minimised, no longer the focus
Glow Dull, no life Natural glow returned

The Change — What My Skin Feels Like Now

Finally, my skin felt relieved.

The pores minimised. The itchiness disappeared. My face got its natural glow back. My actual skin — underneath all that damage — is still baby soft. I just could not feel it for a long time because the barrier was too broken to let any of that through.

The pores did not vanish completely. But they no longer get anyone's attention — including mine.

💗 The lesson: I was not treating my skin badly on purpose. I just did not have the right information. Once I understood what my skin actually needed — everything changed. And it can for you too.
